The Maths Un – Curriculum: I am ready to do more formal maths

“Ruth's energy and passion of teaching math is contagious. With solid solutions on how to teach and approach math I found her ideas very applicable and accessible.” - Tamara

This is not a Maths Curriculum.

Or is it?

Your child is ready for more formal maths.

They may dream of a career in engineering or be asking questions that show a deep interest in mathematics.

But there is a problem.

Up until now you have followed their lead, trusted them to learn at their pace and given them huge amounts of autonomy and control.

You need to retain the choice, flexibility and autonomy.

But you don't feel confident and frankly, you don't have time to research maths that will inspire your child.

Imagine this: Your child is developing epic maths skills and enjoying it . Not just that, you feel confident and calm in supporting them with this as their parent.

This is because you know:

- You have given your child choice, autonomy and freedom in their maths education.

- You have the perfect resources for your child that are easy for you to use.

- You know exactly what to say when family and friends ask you about maths.

- You can swivel and change when you need to with minimal work for you.

- You can dive into maths confidently knowing exactly what to say and how to talk about mathematics as easily as anything else.

I taught maths in secondary schools for over 11 years, specialising in working with those kids that were at risk of not getting that all important C/4 grade.

I saw hundreds of bright children put of maths and have their confidence destroyed through dull worksheets and strict rules with no choice, power or autonomy.

I know that children do not work like this. Exactly like adults, they thrive when they are given respect, when they are listened to and when they know the reason why they are learning maths and why this relates directly to them.

I know that connection and a deep trust has to come first for children to thrive. I apply this to my own home educated children every single day.

This is a course for home educating parents that want to start introducing more formal maths to their child.

I do not work in ages - I firmly believe that all children develop at the rate that is perfect for them.

This is for those that already have some mental maths skills and are showing an interest in maths that you might struggle to find in every day life.

Your child might be needing some more formal methods to move on in their maths learning or they might have ambitions of a career that requires more formal maths or a maths qualification.

You won't be looking to take that qualification just yet,. You and your child are in the middle ground where it could be in their future so you are starting to prepare now.

“Ruth has guided me in engaging my child, who has a real aversion to anything maths related, in a practical, fun manner. She gives so much guidance, advice encouragement and wisdom, all underpinned with a strong evidence base to offer reassurance. I now feel I have a tool box bursting with ideas and a community to support me.” - Kelly

How can a curriculum meet
everyone's needs in maths??

The truth is that it can't - not if it is one size fits all.

That is why this is not a curriculum.

I will guide you over 4 weeks to build a totally flexible set of resources
that meets the needs of your family.

I will tell you exactly how you can talk about the topics to make mathematical
conversations as easeful, joyful and natural for you and your family.

I will answer all your questions in a dedicated community of
like minded home educating parents.

This course last 4 weeks and over that time you will get:

A set of short weekly videos taking you through the key topic for that week including a guide on how to talk about the subject.

A weekly live call to discuss the theme for that week, look at how to impliment the topic in practical ways in your home and answer questions.

A community space that I will be in daily, answering your questions and giving support.

A workbook for you to print and use along side the videos and the live call.

The downloadable curriculum full of my favourite maths resources and a video guide on how to use it.

Ways to trick or coerce your child into learning maths.

A guide to what your child should be doing by a certain age or stage.

Ways to disguise learning boring facts and methods.

A step by step guide to getting your child to learn specific mathematical topics or methods.

Have an easy to dive into set of maths resources that are perfectly tailored to your family.

Know how to speak to your child about maths and how to support them in learning methods and mathematical thinking in ways that are intrinsically interesting.

Feel deeply confident about the maths you are offering and how this is supporting your child and their unique development.

What you really need is the opportunity to see maths done differently.

You need to understand what the research says about learning maths effectively for the long term.

You need to hear from a person who has lived and breathed the school system for over 30 years and been traditionally successful in maths, telling you that traditional methods do not align with positive outcomes for most people.

You need to know that your child can thrive and be successful, in every meaning of the word, without being coerced into memorising meaningless facts or practice.

You need me.

Hi there, I am Ruth - lover of maths, celebrator of children, living for joy and connection.

I was traditionally successful at school. I did all the “right things” like getting good grades, all the extra-curricular stuff, good degree at a good university, straight into work, up the ladder until...

BOOM – I had children.

They did not fit this perfect mould, and by heck – they were loud about it! Now I thank them every single day for showing me that I do not either.

And the chances are -neither do you and your child.

Because if 11 years of teaching in a classroom showed me one thing, it showed me how few people really do fit this mould.

Afters years of painfully and unsuccessfully fighting to change the system from the inside, I took my research and passion for learning and left "traditional" education.

And now I am here, with all my knowledge and passion as well as 5 years of de-schooling and coaching families under my belt, ready to lead a maths revolution.

"Ruth has given me permission to reject mine and others preconceived ideas and equipped me with practical confidence to teach maths. Ruth's courses are amazing. I feel so much more confident and have more resources I know about and I am so here for her philosophy.” - Victoria

What content is covered?

Each week there will be bite sized videos taking your through a mathematical topic and how to talk about this topic. There will be a range of resources for you to choose from to meet your family needs. I have made sure each resource is one that you can dive into over and over again to reduce your workload.

There will also be a weekly live call where we look at how to introduce and implement the maths un - curriculum, with strategies that I use to keep is super low demand and high autonomy.

Week 1: Number Sense

Being flexible with numbers is significantly better than being fast for long term enjoyment and success in maths.

Live call: We will dive into to how to introduce, set up and create a loving and connected environment for learning maths at home.

Week 2: Problem Solving

Not only is it intrinsically interesting if you get the right problem for your child, it is a much richer way to learn maths than focussing on methods.

Live call: Giving autonomy and choice without overwhelm.

Week 3: Physical Problems

These are often very enjoyable and entirely missed by so many as really valuable mathematical activities.

Live call: Handling your own nervous system

Week 4: Mathematical Thinking

An art form that is overlooked in schools and homes but is essential for learning and enjoying maths.

Live call: Why before how.

BONUS: REBOOT

My 6 step process for moving away from a fixed school mindset into a mindset that will best support your child when learning maths.

I don’t work in ages because all children develop at the rate that is perfect for them. I created this for my 9 year old who has developed great number and mental maths skills through life and play but want to be an engineer. We are not ready for working towards exams or qualifications yet. But he is ready to explore maths that doesn’t come up naturally in every day life.

“Ruth has given us a complete overhaul with Maths phobia and my Son has discovered a problem solving approach with numbers is perfect for him . Our perspective has shifted thanks to Ruth's insight and all around lovely , relaxed vibe.”
