Do not destroy curiosity

The temptation at this stage is to move away from exploring maths through physical objects and play and dive into worksheets, facts and methods.

Your main aim should actually be to encourage and maintain curiosity.

This means continuing to use physical objects, modelling written methods but not stressing if your child copies or not as well as being open to a range of ideas and strategies.

When I started down this path with my eldest home educated child, I recorded exactly what I did so that other homeschooling parents can use this in their own home.

Not to copy, but for inspiration. You can grab this for free below.

"The Maths Un-Curriculum has given me so much more confidence in how to approach maths as unschoolers. The resources and ideas are great and we have already used some of them before finishing the course. The best thing is that I have realised that even with more formal maths, it is ok to not know things, to explore then together with out children, and not to be scared of getting things wrong."

Deep Dive Live Course for Parents

Your home schooled child is ready to start learning more formal maths. You are not ready for exams or qualification, but you are aware that there is a chance of these being a part of your child's future. Curriculums, text books and online programmes feel dull. They don't inspire your child, feel really high demand and quite school like. You are looking for something that is totally flexible and adaptable to your child. Where you have full autonomy and choice but without the overwhelm and high demands.

This is a live, 4 week course for parents that want to leave with a completely tailored set of maths resources that are easy to use and dive into at home with your home educated child. No teacher speak. No demands. All the autonomy.

“Ruth has helped me feel more confident about approaching maths in a way that will be fun and engaging, not just for my son but me as well. Despite achieving good grades at maths, I have always felt stressed, anxious and insecure about the subject and Ruth has helped me to feel as though it might actually be fun to revisit maths and I am actually looking forward to getting to do it all again now”
